Description
About the Pro-Ject X1 Turntable
The Pro-Ject X1 Turntable gives you a strong analogue platform straight out of the box, while still leaving room for future system upgrades.
The X1 does not include a built-in phono preamp. As a result, it is designed for use with a quality MM phono stage or an amplifier with a proper moving-magnet phono input.
What we think
At Rapallo, the Pro-Ject X1 is a great choice for customers who want a more refined turntable than the Debut range, but do not want to move into a large high-end analogue setup.
The platform is the big upgrade. The acrylic platter, carbon-aluminium tonearm, improved motor isolation, and adjustable feet all help reduce resonance. Therefore, the X1 gives records a cleaner, more stable, and more confident presentation.
We also like this Ortofon 2M Silver version. The 2M Silver is an OEM cartridge based around the 2M platform, with silver-plated copper coils and upgraded suspension compared with the 2M Red. That gives this X1 package a more refined cartridge match from day one.
The tonearm also gives you proper setup flexibility. It supports azimuth and VTA adjustment, which makes future cartridge upgrades easier than on many simpler plug-and-play turntables.
For NZ customers building a proper vinyl system, the X1 with 2M Silver is a smart long-term choice. Pair it with a good phono stage, a capable integrated amplifier, and quality speakers, and it becomes the centre of a very enjoyable analogue setup.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What is the Pro-Ject X1 with Ortofon 2M Silver?
It is a manual belt-drive hi-fi turntable with an acrylic platter, carbon-aluminium tonearm, electronic speed control, adjustable feet, and a pre-fitted Ortofon 2M Silver moving-magnet cartridge. - Does the Pro-Ject X1 come with a cartridge?
Yes, this version comes pre-fitted with the Ortofon 2M Silver cartridge. That means it is ready to connect to a suitable phono stage or amplifier with MM phono input. - What is the Ortofon 2M Silver cartridge?
The 2M Silver is an OEM moving-magnet cartridge based on the 2M series. It shares many traits with the 2M Red, but uses silver-plated copper coils and upgraded suspension for improved performance. - Does the X1 have a built-in phono preamp?
No, the X1 does not include a built-in phono stage. You will need an amplifier with an MM phono input or a separate external phono preamp. - Can the Pro-Ject X1 play 45 RPM records?
Yes, it plays 33 and 45 RPM records with electronic speed switching, so you do not need to move the belt manually for normal LPs and singles. - Can the Pro-Ject X1 play 78 RPM records?
Yes, the X1 supports 78 RPM playback. However, you must use the correct belt setup and a suitable 78 RPM stylus or cartridge. Do not play shellac 78s with a normal LP stylus. - Can I upgrade the 2M Silver stylus?
Yes, the 2M Silver stylus is interchangeable with 2M Red and 2M Blue stylus options. A 2M Blue stylus is a common upgrade path for more detail and better tracking. - How is the X1 different from the Debut Carbon EVO?
The X1 is a step up from the Debut Carbon EVO. It adds a 20mm acrylic platter, carbon-aluminium tonearm with VTA and azimuth adjustment, improved isolation, and a more substantial X-Series platform. - Can I connect the X1 to powered speakers?
Yes, but only if the powered speakers have a phono input. Otherwise, you will need an external phono preamp between the turntable and the speakers. - Who is the Pro-Ject X1 with 2M Silver best suited to?
It is best for vinyl listeners who want a higher-quality manual turntable with a strong pre-fitted cartridge, better isolation, and a clear upgrade path.
Key Features
Ortofon 2M Silver Cartridge Pre-Fitted
This version of the X1 comes pre-fitted with the Ortofon 2M Silver moving-magnet cartridge. The 2M Silver shares much of the 2M Red platform, but adds silver-plated copper coils and upgraded suspension, giving it a more refined and detailed character.
8.6-Inch Carbon-Aluminium Tonearm
The X1 uses a one-piece 8.6-inch carbon-aluminium tonearm. The carbon layer provides stiffness, while the aluminium tube helps with damping. Also, the one-piece design avoids the extra resonance that can come from a removable headshell.
Azimuth and VTA Adjustment
The X1 tonearm can be adjusted for azimuth and VTA. Therefore, the turntable is better suited to careful cartridge setup and future cartridge upgrades than many entry-level decks.
20mm Acrylic Platter
The heavy 20mm acrylic platter provides a stable, low-resonance platform for records. Acrylic is a strong material for vinyl playback because it helps control unwanted platter resonance.
Electronic 33, 45 and 78 RPM Speed Control
The X1 supports 33, 45 and 78 RPM playback with electronic speed change. So, changing between LPs and singles is simple. For 78 RPM records, use the correct belt setup and a suitable 78 RPM stylus or cartridge.
Precision Main Bearing
The platter runs on a stainless-steel bearing system with a brass bushing and low-friction design. This helps support smooth rotation and stable playback.
Improved Motor Isolation
The X1 uses improved motor isolation to reduce vibration transfer into the plinth, platter, and cartridge. As a result, playback can sound quieter, cleaner, and more focused.
Height-Adjustable TPE-Damped Aluminium Feet
The X1 includes height-adjustable aluminium feet with TPE damping. These help level the turntable and reduce vibration from the support furniture below.
Connect it E Phono Cable Included
Pro-Ject supplies a Connect it E RCA phono cable with the X1. This is a low-capacitance cable designed for turntable use, rather than a generic RCA interconnect.
No Built-In Phono Stage
The X1 is designed as a proper manual hi-fi turntable. It does not include a built-in phono preamp. Therefore, use it with a quality external phono stage or an amplifier with an MM phono input.
