Description

Focal Kanta N°1 Bookshelf Speakers

The Focal Kanta N°1 Bookshelf Speakers are designed for rooms up to around 25m², making it ideal for premium stereo systems, apartment hi-fi setups, office listening rooms, and compact high-performance systems. It can be placed on furniture, but it performs best on the dedicated Kanta N°1 stands.

At Rapallo, the Focal Kanta N°1 is the speaker we would recommend when a customer wants true high-end Focal performance, but does not want a floorstanding speaker.

It sits above Aria and Aria Evo X, yet below Sopra and Utopia. So, it gives you a taste of Focal’s serious loudspeaker engineering in a compact format. The big attraction is the pairing of Flax and Beryllium. Flax gives the speaker natural midrange texture and excellent body. Beryllium adds speed, air, and treble finesse.

The result is a bookshelf speaker that sounds open, detailed, and very refined. It is also more dynamic than many compact speakers. However, it deserves quality amplification. Its 88dB sensitivity is manageable, but the impedance dips to 3.9 ohms, so a capable amplifier will help it sound its best.

We also like the design. Kanta is bold, modern, and very French. The high-density polymer front baffle, moulded multi-ply cabinet, glass top plate, magnetic grille, and finish combinations make it feel special. For NZ customers wanting a compact premium speaker with style, detail, and real musicality, Kanta N°1 is a standout option.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What size room is the Focal Kanta N°1 best suited to?
The Kanta N°1 is best suited to small and medium rooms. Focal recommends it for rooms under 25m², making it a strong match for apartments, lounges, offices, and compact listening rooms.
  2. Does the Focal Kanta N°1 need speaker stands?
It can be placed on suitable furniture, but dedicated stands are strongly recommended. The optional Kanta N°1 stands position the speaker correctly, improve stability, and help with imaging and bass control.
  3. What amplifier works best with the Kanta N°1?
The Kanta N°1 works best with a quality amplifier rated within Focal’s recommended 25W to 150W range. Because impedance dips to 3.9 ohms, choose an amplifier with good current delivery. Naim, Hegel, Musical Fidelity, Rotel, Marantz, and Yamaha are all good starting points.
  4. Is the Kanta N°1 good for music?
Yes, it is excellent for music. The Flax driver gives vocals and instruments natural body, while the Beryllium tweeter adds fine detail, openness, and speed. Therefore, it suits jazz, acoustic, vocals, classical, rock, electronic music, and high-resolution streaming.
  5. Can the Focal Kanta N°1 be used in a home theatre system?
Yes, it can be used in a premium home theatre system. It works well as a front speaker in compact systems or as a surround speaker in a larger Kanta system. For best tonal matching, pair it with other Kanta speakers.
  6. Does the Kanta N°1 need a subwoofer?
Not always. It has strong bass extension for a bookshelf speaker, reaching 46Hz at ±3dB. However, a subwoofer is recommended for larger rooms, home theatre use, or listeners who want deeper low-frequency impact.
  7. Is the Focal Kanta N°1 rear ported?
Yes, it uses a wide rear bass-reflex port. Therefore, it benefits from some space behind the speaker. Careful placement will help improve bass clarity and soundstage depth.
  8. How is the Kanta N°1 different from the Aria Evo X N°1?
The Kanta N°1 sits above Aria Evo X. It adds Focal’s pure Beryllium IAL3 tweeter, a more advanced cabinet design, high-density polymer front baffle, and more premium finish options. As a result, it offers greater treble refinement, speed, and overall sophistication.

Key Features

  • Combines performance and compactness
  • Extended bass frequency response
  • Transducers integrating Focal’s latest technologies
  • Speaker drivers developed and manufactured in France
  • Optional stand for optimal integration
  • Numerous standard finishes
Compact High-End Bookshelf Design

The Kanta N°1 is a 2-way bass-reflex bookshelf speaker. It combines compact dimensions with extended bass response, making it ideal for premium systems where space is limited. Focal recommends it for rooms under 25m².

Pure Beryllium IAL3 Tweeter

The latest-generation IAL3 pure Beryllium inverted dome tweeter delivers speed, precision, and exceptional high-frequency extension. It reaches up to 40kHz, helping the speaker sound open, detailed, and spacious.

6.5-Inch Flax Bass/Midrange Driver

The 6.5-inch Flax bass/midrange driver gives the Kanta N°1 a natural and expressive midrange. It also supports surprisingly strong bass for a compact cabinet. Focal notes that Flax brings clarity and precision, while Beryllium adds treble finesse.

TMD Suspension and NIC Motor

The Flax driver uses Focal’s TMD suspension and NIC motor technology. These help reduce distortion, improve driver control, and support a more neutral and defined midrange.

Rear Bass-Reflex Port

The wide rear port helps the speaker deliver extended bass response without dynamic compression. However, placement matters. Give the speaker some space from the rear wall where possible, or use careful positioning if placing it closer to boundaries.

High-Density Polymer Front Baffle

The front panel uses high-density polymer for improved rigidity and damping. This helps reduce unwanted cabinet effects and supports sharper imaging and better sound definition.

Premium Cabinet Construction

The cabinet uses a moulded multi-ply structure with a glass top plate and magnetic grille. As a result, the Kanta N°1 feels more like a premium design object than a standard bookshelf speaker.

Optional Dedicated Stand

Focal offers optional Kanta N°1 stands, height adjustable from 61.5cm to 64.1cm. These attach to the speaker base and include decoupling spikes and glides for stability.
