Fantastic Speakers and even better Service

I came across these speakers on Rapollo website while doing some investigation following my listening to the speakers at a local showroom but coming away disappointed with the sound. These were to replace some large 1990's 3 way speakers that have served me for many decades and still sound great. But I have moved to a new house so needed smaller bookshelf speakers. I had taken some of my CD's into the local showroom to listen to my own music as the music I had previously heard sounded amazing, but was obviously new and well recorded. So armed with Skid Row, GnR, John Mellencamp and Pink Floyd i sat in for an hour and listened to my music on the Paradigms and other speakers in store. The sound was lacking in clarity and base compared to my older speakers. I left disappointed and forgot about them. A couple of months later I started goggling why new $2,300 speakers could sound lacking compared to my 30 year old speakers. The conclusion I came to was that the showroom I was listening to them in was massive - 5 x as big as my living room and the placement in the showroom of 2m away from the wall probably wasn't helping. During this learning process I came across the same speakers on sale at Rapollo for $600 less. Now I didn't have an issue with paying 35% more for the speakers, in fact I would rather support local businesses, but the staff failed to identify for me why the speakers may not have sounded as good as I would have liked. So I rang Rapollo and one of the staff called back. We had a good discussion about audio dynamics etc. and it gave me the confidence that these speakers would be great in my environment. In the end the speakers and reccommended stands cost me $1,000 less than from my local store. The sound is brilliant. I was worried that the bass may be lacking but I have played any and everything on them and it all sounds, clear, crisp and well balanced. Even the deepest of bass guitar tacks sound as expected with no muddying or loss of other ranges. Thanks very much Rapollo - if I need anything else in the future I know where to come.

Canadian Quality

It never ceases to amaze me just how high the bar has been raised for affordable speakers. The Premiers sit near the top of this pack which I would cap at $2500. I've heard plenty of Bookshelf speakers costing less and more than the Paradigms but I'd place these in my top 3. Stylish looks, robust and easy-to-use. They have a wide dispersion tweeter which is instantly noticeable. Huge, wide and tall soundstage. Jet black background, depth 3D image and highly accurate. I never had to play around with positioning. They have a silky, polished sound that adds a little extra mojo to your favorite tracks. I wouldn't say the are coloured in anyway and they have no noticeable or annoying frequency exaggerations, they are neutral and clean. I guess you would say they have that bit of x factor that makes fun to listen to. Sensitivity is a little low, they take a bit of power and sound best when the volumes up. At low volume levels they are relaxed and very non fatiguing. Boost the volume and everything comes to life. Drums get real, bass gets deep and full and all the subtle high frequencies become crystal clear. They give you the musical experience you have paid for. They just went from good to great after break in. The bass is so full there's no need for a sub and even after swapping back and forth from Klipsch Fortes the bass was still impressive. The whole performance remained impressive and these soeakers are 1/4 the price of the Fortes. If someone broke into my house, stole my Fortes and left the Premiers I'd be ok. If I had only these, I'd be happy. They are that good. The only way to improve them would be making them a 3 way to get better bass and mid separation. Luckily they do just that when stepping up to the floor standers! Enjoy

Description

Paradigm Premier 200B Bookshelf Speakers

The Paradigm Premier 200B Bookshelf Speakers are one of those speakers that consistently surprises people the moment they hear it.

What stands out immediately is the scale. For a bookshelf speaker, it produces a remarkably full and room-filling sound, with bass performance that feels closer to a compact floorstander than a traditional standmount.

The tonal balance is another big strength. Paradigm has managed to strike a really nice balance between detail and listenability. The highs are crisp and open, but never harsh, while the midrange has enough warmth and body to keep vocals and instruments sounding natural.

In NZ, particularly medium-sized lounges or apartment setups, the 200B makes a huge amount of sense. It delivers genuine hi-fi performance without taking over the room physically. Pair it with a good integrated amplifier and solid speaker stands, and you have a system that can comfortably compete with much larger setups.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Are the Paradigm Premier 200B speakers suitable for music and home theatre?
Yes, the Premier 200B performs exceptionally well in both stereo music systems and home theatre setups. They can be used as main left/right speakers or as surround speakers in a larger Paradigm system.
  2. Do the Paradigm Premier 200B speakers need a subwoofer?
For most music listening, they provide surprisingly strong bass on their own. However, in larger rooms or for home theatre use, adding a subwoofer can improve low-frequency impact and overall scale.

They pair well with quality integrated amplifiers in the 50–130W range. Amplifiers from Yamaha, Marantz, Anthem, and Musical Fidelity are all excellent matches.
  4. Are these bookshelf speakers easy to drive?
Yes, with a 90dB sensitivity and 8-ohm impedance, the Premier 200B is relatively easy to drive compared to many bookshelf speakers in this category.
  5. Should the Paradigm Premier 200B be used on stands?
Yes, for best performance they should ideally be placed on solid speaker stands. Proper positioning improves imaging, bass response, and overall soundstage performance.
