About the Marantz Stereo 70s Slimline AV Receiver

The Marantz Stereo 70s Slimline AV Receiver has three HDMI input support signals up to 8K/60Hz and 4K/120Hz. Therefore, the Stereo 70s can become the central connection point for a television, gaming console, media player and other video sources.

It remains a dedicated stereo receiver rather than a surround-sound model. You get two amplified speaker channels, stereo pre-outs and two subwoofer outputs. Plus, an MM phono input, digital inputs and high-resolution network playback make it equally capable with music.

The Marantz Stereo 70s is available for demo in Rapallo’s experience rooms. Visit us to hear its stereo performance and compare suitable speaker combinations before you buy.

What We Think

The Stereo 70s fills an important gap between a conventional stereo amplifier and a multichannel AV receiver. It is ideal for listeners who want proper stereo speakers and extensive HDMI connectivity but have no interest in filling the room with surround speakers.

Its 75-watt Class A/B amplifier is supported by Marantz HDAM circuitry and a discrete output stage. The presentation is characteristically smooth, warm and easy to enjoy. Dialogue remains clear, while music has more space and scale than a typical television or soundbar can produce.

The HDMI connectivity is a major advantage. Six inputs provide far more flexibility than most stereo amplifiers, while three accept 8K video and high-frame-rate gaming signals. However, the Stereo 70s supports ARC rather than eARC according to Marantz’s published APAC specifications.

It is also important to understand what the receiver does not do. There are no centre, surround or Dolby Atmos speaker channels. Instead, all sound is reproduced through the front left and right speakers, with the option of adding one or two powered subwoofers.

We recommend the Stereo 70s for a living-room system where television, movies, gaming, vinyl and streamed music are equally important. Better still, you can audition it in Rapallo’s experience rooms and hear how it performs with different speakers.

Reviews

The Absolute Sound found the Stereo 70s particularly relevant for listeners who want hi-fi stereo in the same room as their television. Its reviewer described the sound as gently rounded, warm and comfortable over long listening sessions. Dialogue clarity and the extensive HDMI connectivity were also identified as key strengths. Read The Absolute Sound review.

The review also noted that very complex music and difficult speaker loads can expose the receiver’s power limitations. Therefore, matching it with appropriate speakers is important. Customers can audition the Stereo 70s in Rapallo’s experience rooms to assess both its tonal character and speaker compatibility.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What is the Marantz Stereo 70s?
The Stereo 70s is a slimline 2.2-channel AV receiver. It combines two-channel Class A/B amplification, six HDMI inputs, HEOS streaming, an MM phono stage and dual subwoofer outputs in one compact component.
  2. Is the Marantz Stereo 70s available to audition?
Yes. The Marantz Stereo 70s is available for demo in Rapallo’s experience rooms. You can hear its performance with suitable speakers and discuss the best system combination for your room.
  3. Is the Stereo 70s a surround-sound receiver?
No. It is a two-channel stereo receiver with outputs for left and right speakers plus up to two powered subwoofers. It does not power a centre speaker, rear surrounds or Dolby Atmos speakers.
  4. Can the Stereo 70s replace a soundbar?
Yes. Paired with quality stereo speakers, it can provide wider imaging, clearer dialogue and stronger music performance than many soundbars. Adding a powered subwoofer will improve movie bass and low-frequency impact.
  5. How powerful is the Marantz Stereo 70s?
Marantz rates it at 75 watts per channel into 8 ohms from 20Hz to 20kHz, with both channels driven at 0.08% distortion. It is best matched with reasonably efficient speakers in small or medium rooms.
  6. Does the Stereo 70s support 4K at 120Hz?
Yes. Three of its six HDMI inputs support signals up to 4K/120Hz. Compatible sources, certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cables and a suitable television are required.
  7. Does it support 8K video?
Yes. Three HDMI inputs support video signals up to 8K/60Hz. The receiver can also upscale compatible 1080p and 4K sources to 8K.
  8. Does the Marantz Stereo 70s have HDMI eARC?
Marantz’s official APAC information sheet specifies ARC rather than eARC. ARC provides convenient television audio and control, but it does not offer the full audio bandwidth associated with eARC.
  9. Is the Stereo 70s suitable for PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X?
Yes. Its compatible HDMI inputs support 4K/120Hz, VRR, ALLM and QFT. Therefore, it is well suited to a two-channel gaming system with a modern television.
  10. Which streaming services does the Stereo 70s support?
HEOS provides access to compatible services such as Spotify Connect, TIDAL, Amazon Music and internet radio. Availability and features vary by region and can change. AirPlay 2 and Bluetooth offer additional streaming options.
  11. Can I connect a turntable to the Stereo 70s?
Yes. It has a built-in moving-magnet phono input. A turntable fitted with a compatible MM cartridge can connect directly without a separate phono preamplifier.
  12. Can I connect two subwoofers?
Yes. The Stereo 70s has two subwoofer outputs. Dual subs can produce smoother bass across multiple seating positions when they are positioned and configured correctly.
  13. Can I upgrade the Stereo 70s with a power amplifier?
Yes. The full-range stereo pre-outs can feed an external power amplifier. This is useful if you later choose less efficient speakers or need more output in a larger room.
  14. Which speakers work well with the Stereo 70s?
Paradigm Premier, Triangle Borea, ELAC Debut Reference and Klipsch Reference Premiere are strong options. However, the best match depends on room size, listening volume and YOUR tonal preference. Visit Rapallo’s experience rooms to compare suitable combinations.

Genuine Two-Channel Marantz Amplification

The discrete Class A/B power amplifier delivers 75 watts per channel into 8 ohms with both channels driven. It is designed for confident, refined stereo performance with suitable bookshelf or floorstanding speakers.

Marantz HDAM Technology

Marantz Hyper Dynamic Amplifier Modules replace conventional integrated op-amps at critical points in the signal path. As a result, the receiver is designed to deliver fast response, low noise and a natural tonal balance.

Slimline Construction

At approximately 109mm high without raised antennas, the Stereo 70s is around half the height of many full-sized AV receivers. Therefore, it fits more easily into contemporary television furniture.

Six HDMI Inputs

Six rear HDMI inputs provide ample connectivity for gaming consoles, disc players, streaming devices and other video sources. One HDMI output carries the selected picture to the television.

Three 8K-Capable HDMI Inputs

Three HDMI inputs support video signals up to 8K/60Hz and 4K/120Hz. This makes the Stereo 70s suitable for compatible current-generation gaming consoles and modern displays.

Gaming-Friendly HDMI Features

Support includes Variable Refresh Rate, Auto Low Latency Mode and Quick Frame Transport. These technologies can reduce tearing and latency when the complete video system is compatible.

Comprehensive HDR Passthrough

The receiver supports HDR10, HDR10+, Dolby Vision, Hybrid Log-Gamma and Dynamic HDR passthrough. Therefore, compatible sources can retain their intended brightness, contrast and colour information.

HDMI ARC and CEC

ARC sends television audio back to the receiver through the HDMI connection. HDMI CEC can also provide convenient power, input and volume control with compatible equipment.

Video Upscaling

Compatible 1080p and 4K video can be upscaled to 8K for connection to a suitable television. Actual picture quality will still depend on the source and display.

HEOS Built-in

HEOS provides app-controlled music streaming, internet radio, compatible online services and multiroom audio. Available services vary by country and can change over time.

AirPlay 2, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth

AirPlay 2 supports convenient playback from compatible Apple devices. Dual-band Wi-Fi, Ethernet and Bluetooth provide additional network and wireless options.

Bluetooth Headphone Transmission

The Stereo 70s can transmit audio to compatible Bluetooth headphones. This is useful for private evening listening without disconnecting the main speakers.

High-Resolution Audio Playback

Network and USB playback supports FLAC and WAV up to 192kHz/24-bit, plus DSD at 2.8MHz and 5.6MHz. Gapless playback is supported for compatible high-resolution formats.

Moving-Magnet Phono Input

A dedicated MM phono stage allows a compatible turntable to connect directly. Therefore, many vinyl systems will not require a separate phono preamplifier.

Speaker A and B Outputs

Four speaker terminals support two selectable stereo speaker pairs. You could, for example, connect speakers in the main lounge and a second pair in an adjoining area, subject to suitable speaker impedance.

Two Subwoofer Outputs

Dual subwoofer pre-outs let you add one or two powered subwoofers. Correctly positioned dual subs can create smoother and more consistent bass across the listening area.

Stereo Pre-Amplifier Outputs

Full-range left and right pre-outs allow connection to an external power amplifier. This provides a useful upgrade path if you later need more power for demanding speakers.

Pure Direct Mode

Pure Direct bypasses unnecessary processing and display circuitry for a cleaner stereo signal path. It is especially useful for focused music listening.

Suggested System Match

The Stereo 70s works best with reasonably efficient bookshelf speakers or compact floorstanders. Paradigm Premier, Triangle Borea, ELAC Debut Reference and Klipsch Reference Premiere are all natural candidates.

Paradigm Premier 700F speakers offer a balanced match for music and television. They provide good dialogue clarity, controlled bass and a refined tonal balance without presenting an excessively difficult load.

Triangle Borea BR08 speakers provide a more lively and open presentation. Meanwhile, Klipsch Reference Premiere models offer high efficiency and strong dynamics for movies, rock music and gaming.

Adding an SVS sealed subwoofer is worthwhile even when using floorstanding speakers. It improves low-frequency extension for films while taking pressure away from the main speakers.

Speaker matching always matters. Therefore, we recommend hearing the Stereo 70s in Rapallo’s experience rooms before choosing your final system.
