Whatever source is powered the switcher automatically detects it. When you power up another source the switcher then detects the new one automatically.
With one fixed HDMI cable (pigtail) this converter not only reduces cost but also saves time for consumers.
This Pigtail HDMI Switcher routes high definition video (in multiple resolutions up to 1080p) and digital audio from any one of the two sources to a single plasma, LCD or projector. All inputs accommodate the connections of the high definition video sources simultaneously, compatible well for HD-DVD, SkyHDi, Freeview HD,PS3, Bluray Players, Xbox360 etc. The output sends the high definition audio/video signals to a high definition display.
Smart Function (Auto Selection): When more than one HDMI™ sources connected to the switch the user leaves the desired source on, the others off, then the switch will choose this source automatically and will route desired HDMI™ signal to the display. As result of this functionality, user could use simple method of power off/on sources to choose the desired HDMI™ signal. If several sources are powered on, the last powered source will be chosen. This allows the switch to still be used with sources that are always on such as cable TV and satellite receivers.

PLEASE READ "Success with HDMI Switchers/Splitters"
Review
Mini Review from Murray @ RapalloAV,
I’ve been using one of these pigtail switchers at home now for more than a year and have to report its one of the best cleaver devices I’ve ever used for TVs that lack enough spare HDMI ports.
I use an HDMI splitter downstairs to split SkyHDi, one side goes to my TV downstairs, the other to the bedroom upstairs : SkyHDi input 1 pigtail switcher, Oppo BD player input 2 pigtail switcher > pigtail switcher output to TV. I never turn off the Sky decoder downstairs so the pigtail switcher always favors Sky, when I want to play a DVD it automatically switches the signal from Sky to DVD after powering up the DVD player from standby. The pigtail switcher works perfectly like a dream every single time without fault, all without a remote or power supply. This would be one of our most reliable HDMI switchers and certainly a great add on for any home theatre lacking enough HDMI ports.
